Art Director
2022 - Present
My role at Chess.com came with one simple directive: Make chess more fun. With the help of an incredibly talented and diverse team from across the globe, I've worked to create a universe that revolves around the green pawn. During my tenure, Chess.com has seen unprecedented growth and now regularly hosts over 20 million games every day.

Event Branding
Chess.com hosts some of the biggest events in the chess community. Our events are livestreamed to millions of avid chess fans around the world in several languages. The branding needs to be a reflection of that scope and the entertainment and production value we strive to deliver to our audience.

Pro Chess League
Incremental change is at the core of Chess.com's philosophy. With that in mind, I was tasked with rebranding the Pro Chess League.

Going to the Dark Side
I worked closely with our copywriters and marketing team leaders to overhaul the entire email marketing program. Focusing on clear, concise messaging, dynamic artwork, and a mobile-first experience, we aimed for something more than an inbox clogger.

Case Study
ChessPersonality.com | Art Direction, Illustration, Logo Design

The Problem
A once popular microsite had stopped performing. It needed to be brought back bigger, better, and more beautiful.

Old ChessPersonality UI

The Solution
The site needed, well, personality. We accomplished that through custom illustrations, a complete stylistic overhaul of the user interface, and more engaging questions with direct appeals to the online chess community.

The Results
The new ChessPersonality was a creative and quantifiable success, outperforming the previous incarnation in every important metric.

When someone finds out I'm a designer for Chess.com, their first question is usually something along the lines of, "So...do you, like, make the boards and pieces?" I explain that, no, my job is more about building a brand that people connect with. But on one specific occasion, it actually was my job.
